What is the retina?

• The retina is the innermost, thin layer of nerve cells that lines the back of the eye. The function of the retina is to convert the light into neural signals and send them to the brain for visual recognition. The retina is a vital tissue, and retinal disorders may severely affect the sight and cause blindness, if not treated on time.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

• Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes mellitus that damages the nerves and blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue lining the inner wall at the back of the eye known as the retina.

Who is most likely to get diabetic retinopathy?

• Anyone with diabetes. The longer someone has diabetes, the more likely he or she will get diabetic retinopathy. Nearly half of all people with diabetes will develop some degree of diabetic retinopathy during their lifetime.

What causes diabetic retinopathy?

• Diabetic retinopathy is seen as the most common cause of vision loss in people who have diabetes. This retinal disorder happens due to the damage caused by diabetes to the tiny blood vessels located in the retina- microangiopathy.

What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

• It’s difficult for a person to identify the early onset of this condition. However, as it starts getting worse, symptoms will begin to arise, such as:
• • Seeing lots of floaters (various shapes that appear to be floating in the field of vision)
  • Having blurred vision
  • Inconsistent focus
  • Color blindness
  • Poor vision especially at night
  • Loss of vision
